Summer in South Florida
Especially in summer, birds are drawn to chimneys and build nests. Sometimes it's a dead bird in the fireplace — other times just a nest blocking the flue. Either way, I take care of it.

What I do
I remove bird nests humanely. If a nest is occupied, I work around the timing so birds and chicks aren't harmed. Dead bird in the fireplace? I handle that too — it's all part of the call.
WHY SUMMER IS PEAK
Why summer is peak
South Florida birds nest from spring through late summer. A warm, dark vertical shaft looks exactly like the inside of a hollow tree to them. No cap, no damper — it's an open invitation. Most calls come during the warmer months; that's when to get ahead of it.

Cap the chimney
A chimney cap or flue-top damper stops birds before they start. Install one and the problem doesn't come back.
Chimney cap — keeps birds out
A chimney cap on top of the flue keeps birds out — and squirrels, raccoons, water, and debris while it's at it. Still vents smoke. Install it once and you're done. Schedule the cap install when I come to clear the nest and it's one trip.
Flue-top damper — alternative
A flue-top damper seals the chimney when the fireplace isn't in use — no birds in, no conditioned air out. If you're not ready for a cap, the damper gets the job done. Ask Joe which fits your setup.
